After serving six months in jail for a liquor policy case, AAP MP Sanjay Singh is granted bail.

New Delhi: On Tuesday, the Supreme Court granted bail to Sanjay Singh, the head of the Aam Aadmi Party, and asked the Enforcement Directorate, which had detained Mr. Singh, pointed questions, such as why he had been imprisoned for more than six months without being given a chance to defend himself or get back the ₹ 2 crore bribe that was allegedly paid.

The agency, claiming the party collected 600 crore in bribes, was told by the court that "nothing has been recovered... there is no trace (of money allegedly received by the AAP as bribes for allotting liquor licences to the 'South Group')".

The court then ordered Additional Solicitor General SV Raju to speak with the ED and determine if Mr. Singh's detention is now necessary. Following the Enforcement Directorate's declaration that it did not desire custody, Mr. Singh was freed.

"I am making this statement (not opposing bail) without going into the merits of the case and keeping all the rights and contentions open," said Mr. Raju.

The court had already noted that in his first comments, accused person Dinesh Arora—who later became a government witness or approver—had not implicated Mr. Singh. Based on comments made by Mr. Arora, who was granted release in August, Mr. Singh was taken into custody.

Since his arrest in October in connection with the alleged liquor policy fraud, which rocked the opposition party and resulted in the arrests of Mr Sisodia and Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal weeks before the election, Sanjay Singh has been detained in Delhi's Tihar Jail.

Charges of money laundering related to the purported scheme led to Mr. Singh's detention.

His previous bail requests were denied, even by the Delhi High Court, which stated in February that there was "no ground" for release.

Then, the ED had contested the bail request, claiming that Mr. Singh had been involved in the acquisition, possession, concealment, disbursement, and use of criminal gains resulting from the purported liquor fraud.

Sanjay Singh of the AAP gets bail

After a panel of Justices Sanjiv Khanna, Dipankar Datta, and Prasanna B. Varale declared that Mr. Singh might be discharged while the trial was pending, such relief was ultimately provided this afternoon.

The trial court will determine the terms and circumstances of the release, according to the court. The fact that Mr. Singh is able to engage in political activities—that is, run for office and support the AAP, which may be shorthanded in well-known leaders in the run-up to the elections—is noteworthy, though.

He has been advised not to discuss the probe, though.

The court further declared that precedent in comparable circumstances could not be applied to the bail.

Atishi, a colleague and Delhi PWD Minister, expressed happiness at Mr. Singh's release by posting on X (formerly Twitter) with the message "satyameva jayate," or "the truth will win." Since Chief Minister Kejriwal's detention, Atishi has spearheaded the AAP's resistance and claims of innocence.

She asserted this morning that if she and the other four AAP leaders do not join the Bharatiya Janata Party, they will be arrested by central agents in relation to the alleged liquor policy scandal. The opposition has often charged the BJP with targeting opponents with the help of federal agencies, especially in the run-up to an election. Similarly consistently, the BJP has refuted the accusations.

What Is the Alleged Scam of Delhi Liquor Policy?

The Enforcement Directorate asserts that the now-repeated spirits policy gave retailers an unconscionably large profit margin of 185% and wholesalers a profit margin of 12%. Six percent of the latter, or more than ₹ 600 crore, were bribes, and it is said that the AAP utilised the funds to finance its election campaigns.

The ED labelled Chief Minister Kejriwal the "kingpin" of this purported fraud, and on March 21 he was taken into custody. Up to April 15, Mr. Kejriwal, who is still in charge of the Delhi administration, is being held in Tihar Jail.

FIIs may boost their position in equity markets in FY25; see top sectors and stock choices.

In FY25, FIIs could invest more in the equity markets; see top stocks and sectors for recommendations.

In FY24, global investors contributed Rs 2.08 lakh crore to the domestic equity market and Rs 1.21 lakh crore to the debt market.

Foreign institutional investors' (FIIs') inflows are anticipated to remain high in the fiscal year 2025 due to the economy's strong growth and the pace of profits development. Global investors had previously invested Rs 1.21 lakh crore in the loan market and Rs 2.08 lakh crore in the domestic stock market in FY24. As a consequence, the BSE Sensex, the benchmark stock index, increased by about 25% in the 12 months leading up to March 2024, while the BSE Midcap and BSE Smallcap, two broader indexes, increased by 63% and 60%, respectively.

In the meantime, domestic equities market foreign portfolio investment (FPI) holdings fell to a decadal low of 16.6% in 2023, mostly as a result of a selloff brought on by portfolio underperformance and an increase in US bond rates. Alchemy Capital Management's Head Quant and Portfolio Manager, Alok Agarwal, stated: "FPI inflows in FY24 remained robust, indicating continued foreign investor confidence in the Indian market, even with the decline." Furthermore, domestic mutual funds and direct retail investors have significantly increased their free float ownership of NSE-listed companies, thereby reducing the influence of FPI flows. This has helped to counterbalance the impact of FPI outflows. The rise of retail investors in the domestic stock market has also been instrumental in this regard.

According to him, India is one of the few major economies that has double-digit growth in nominal GDP, double-digit increase in corporate profitability, and double-digit return on equity. "We anticipate sustained strong foreign direct investment (FDI) flows and their subsequent escalation in their market share in India," stated Agarwal.

As of March 15, 2024, FIIs held assets in the Indian financial services industry valued at Rs 18.29 lakh crore. According to NSDL statistics, information technology came in second at Rs. 6.45 lakh crore, followed by oil, gas and consumable fuels at Rs. 5.80 lakh crore, automobiles and auto components at Rs. 4.39 lakh crore, FMCG at Rs. 4.11 lakh crore, healthcare at Rs. 3.62 lakh crore and capital goods at Rs. 2.85 lakh crore.

Geojit Financial Services' chief investment strategist, VK Vijayakumar

"The FPIs were compelled to remain buyers in India due to the robustness of the Indian stock market and the improving macroeconomic conditions in the country. It's likely that this tendency will continue.

"With a consistent flow from domestic institutional investors (DII) and now if steady FII participation resumes, there is potential for India to surpass a 20% weighting in the MSCI EM Index by the second half of 2024 itself," Nuvama Institutional Equities stated in expressing its opinion on the strong inflows of institutional investors.

As of December 2023, FIIs owned a 71.93% holding in CarTrade Tech and a 64.42% investment in Samhi Hotels, according to data provided by Ace Equity. Additionally, they owned 62.71% of Delhivery and 63.72% of Paytm. Additionally, more than 50% of shares in a number of other businesses, including 360 One Wam, Redington, Zomato, Axis Bank, Five-Star Business Finance, Shriram Finance, HDFC Bank, and Max Financial Services, were owned by foreign investors.

ED contacts Apple to get Arvind Kejriwal's iPhone while it is being held, but encounters a password issue: Report

Arvind Kejriwal, the Chief Minister of Delhi, departs at Rouse Avenue Court on Thursday in New Delhi, India.

Arvind Kejriwal's Arrest: According to sources familiar with the matter, Enforcement Directorate (ED) investigators, who have been holding Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal in custody for more than a week, have contacted Apple for assistance in accessing his iPhone.

According to the source, ED has formally contacted Apple, the phone's maker, in an attempt to acquire access to Kejriwal's iPhone. However, they were told that a password was necessary to get any data.

Senior authorities involved in the probe claimed that during interrogation, the Chief Minister stated that accessing his phone data and chats would offer information about the Aam Aadmi Party's (AAP) "election strategy" and pre-election alliances.

According to reports, the ED has recovered no electronic evidence from the Chief Minister's personal laptops or PCs. However, they seized four cell phones, including his. On March 21, his arrest resulted in the discovery of roughly ₹70,000 at his apartment, which was not seized. Sources informed IE that the Chief Minister had turned off his iPhone and had not divulged his password.

The Chief Minister informed the ED that he had been using the same phone for almost a year and that the device he used to create the liquor policy in 2020-2021 was no longer in his possession.

Earlier on Saturday, the ED quizzed Delhi minister Kailash Gahlot for around five hours and recorded his testimony in connection with a money-laundering inquiry into the AAP government's now-abolished excise policy.

Gahlot, 49, is an AAP politician and Najafgarh MLA who works as the minister for transport, home, and law in the Delhi government under Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, who has been detained in connection with the case by the federal agency.

According to reports, Gahlot was questioned about the formation of the excise policy for 2021-22 while serving in the Group of Ministers (GoM) alongside former deputy chief minister Manish Sisodia and former urban development minister Satyendar Jain.

Gahlot said he was summoned by the ED for interrogation in the matter because "probably I was part of the GoM..." It (the inquiry) included all areas of the policy, and I responded to the best of my knowledge and recall," PTI said.

The excise case includes alleged corruption and money laundering in the drafting and implementation of the Delhi government's tax policy for 2021-22, which was later revoked.

Following a suggestion by Delhi Lieutenant Governor V K Saxena, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) was charged with looking into the alleged anomalies in the formulation and implementation of the liquor policy. The ED filed a complaint under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act.

Previously, the ED seized AAP leaders Sisodia and Sanjay Singh in connection with the investigation, and they are now in judicial custody.

The Aam Aadmi Party and its officials have continually denied claims of impropriety, with Kejriwal claiming that the case was staged by the BJP-led Centre to depict AAP as corrupt.

Income Tax FY-2025: How to Switch Between New and Old Tax Regimes

Until FY 2019-20 (which concluded on March 31, 2020), there was just one tax system with four tax slabs and rates. The New Tax Regime was implemented in 2020.

Income Tax 2024-25: During the Union Budget hearings for fiscal year 2023-24, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman stated that the new tax structure will be implemented as the default regime. This new tax policy went into effect in 2020. The current laws provide that if taxpayers fail to disclose their choice with their employer, deductions will be handled in accordance with the New Tax Regime.

Union Finance Minister Sitharaman emphasised in her speech on Budget recommendations for Fiscal Year 2023-24 that one of the primary goals of the new income tax system is to give individuals more control over their financial management. Rather than using government incentives or punishments to compel decisions, taxpayers are given significant leeway in deciding how to spend their money.

Nonetheless, taxpayers who choose to cling to old taxation rules have been granted flexibility by measures in Budget 2023, which allow them to switch between old and new regimes. The frequency with which such transitions occur, however, is dependent on certain forms of income.

Salaried Individual

A salaried individual has the ability to choose between the new and old tax regimes many times during the fiscal year. The new tax system provides fewer tax deductions and exemptions than the previous tax regime, which allowed for different deductions from taxable income under Chapter VI A. Section 80C is a well-known and widely applied deduction.

Profits from business or profession

Individuals who earn a living from their company or profession, on the other hand, can only make one decision. For example, if a person with business income moves from the old to the new system in FY 2023, they will be ineligible to transfer again. Individuals with company income who opt out of the new tax regime will be unable to opt back in in the future.

How can I switch while submitting an ITR?

The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) recently issued two new income tax return forms for the Assessment Year 2024-25: ITR-1 (SAHAJ) and ITR-4 (SUGAM). ITR Form 1 now contains the option to pick a tax regime. To opt out of the new tax regime, ITR 4 taxpayers (individuals with business or professional income) must complete form 10-IEA.

Previously, people had to complete Form 10-IE to select the new tax regime. However, Form 10-IE, which allowed people to opt into the new tax system, has been terminated. This amendment attempts to make the new tax regime the default setting beginning in the fiscal year 2023-24. As a result, unless people take particular steps to opt out of the new tax scheme, it will apply automatically.

Old vs. New Tax Regime

Individuals can take advantage of a variety of tax breaks and deductions under the previous tax system. Exemptions and deductions often claimed include home rent allowance (HRA), leave travel allowance (LTA), and deductions under Sections 80C, 80D, 80CCD(1b), 80CCD(2), and more.

New Tax Regime

The exclusions and deductions provided under the Old Regime do not apply to the New Regime. If the taxable income (after all deductions) under the prior regime was less than Rs 5 lakh, the person did not have to pay any tax.

If your taxable income is less than Rs 7 lakh, the full amount would be tax-free under the new regime.
  • Income up to Rs 3 lakh is tax-free.
  • Income between Rs 3 lakh and Rs 6 lakh is taxed at 5%.
  • Over Rs 6 lakh to Rs 9 lakh, it is 10%.
  • Over Rs 9 lakh to Rs 12 lakh, it's 15%.
  • Over Rs.12 lakh to Rs.15 lakh, it is 20%.
  • Above Rs 15 lakh, it's 30%.

Old Tax Regime

  • Income Tax Slabs (Rs) Income Tax Rates (%)
  • From 0 to 2,50,000: 0%
  • From 2,50,001 to 5,00,000 5%.
  • From 5,000,001 to 10,000,000, 20%
  • From 10,000,001 and above 30%

COP28 concludes with an agreement to move away from fossil fuels.

Nations embrace first-ever climate bargain on fossil powers

The agreement reached at the COP28 climate talks in Dubai included a pledge to move away from all fossil fuels for the first time.

Sultan Al Jaber of the United Arab Emirates, who presided over this year's UN-sponsored summit, mediated a deal that was robust enough to win over the US and the European Union to the need to drastically reduce the use of fossil fuels while maintaining the support of Saudi Arabia and other oil producers.

The agreement's requirements, which helped persuade the sceptics, require nations to swiftly and justly transition their energy systems away from fossil fuels. As per the agreement, nations are also expected to participate in a worldwide transition initiative, instead of being strictly forced to undergo that change on their own.

"Together, we have faced the facts and guided the world towards the correct path," stated Al Jaber, who also holds the position of CEO at Abu Dhabi National Oil Company. On Wednesday, one day later than planned, he lowered the gavel to seal the deal. Delegates praised it and gave it cheers.

Even though the result is not as dramatic as most countries had hoped, it is nonetheless a significant step forward: Moving away from oil and gas, the fuels that have supported the world economy for decades, has not been mentioned in any previous COP text.

The speed at which that becomes a reality will be determined by investors, consumers, and national governments, not by the diplomatic wrangling that sealed the deal today. Glasgow promised two years ago to phase out coal use, but consumption has since increased, and it is still very unlikely that global warming will be kept to the 1.5C target set by the Paris Agreement.

Nevertheless, the Dubai ruling represents a significant turning point in the global transition to a low-carbon energy system. By the end of the decade, the text also commits to tripling the amount of renewable energy deployed and tripling the rate of efficiency gains. An earlier COP28 agreement establishes operations as a diligently fought fund to address the losses and damages resulting from climate change.

An agreement is only as good as how it is carried out. Al Jaber declared, "We are what we do, not what we say." "We have to take the required actions to make this agreement a reality."

The environment programme director at the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation and a seasoned US climate negotiator, Jonathan Pershing, said that the COP28 language advocating a reduction in the use of fossil fuels will send “a signal” that “the world is now thinking about it” and alter the way investors assess the risk of those ventures.

Diplomatic Win

The last-minute agreement is a diplomatic victory for the UAE and Al Jaber, who was controversially chosen to lead this year's negotiations due to his position at Adnoc. Despite some setbacks, including accusations that he used his position to promote oil deals and a disagreement regarding the science underlying climate change, he will contend that he succeeded in his mission.

Climate activists took issue with Al Jaber's decision to use his presidency to firmly integrate the oil and gas industry into the COP process, as there were more fossil fuel company representatives than at any previous summit.

More than fifty businesses came to an agreement with him to cut emissions from their own operations. It made no mention of the amount of oil and gas produced, but a commitment to cut methane pollution—which is 80 times more hazardous than carbon dioxide—to almost nothing by the end of the decade might have a significant effect on emissions.

Saudi Arabia nevertheless launched a surprise attack to thwart any attempt to incorporate a phase-out of fossil fuels in the text. Bloomberg News asked the kingdom's Energy Minister if he would be pleased to see a phase-down in the text as COP28 got underway.

"It's not at all," he answered.

Subsequently, the Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries wrote to its members requesting that they oppose any legislation that emphasises fossil fuels over emissions.

The alliance of oil producers was ultimately left too isolated to oppose, even though the final wording was softened to address their concerns.

Government to sell 7 lakh tonnes of onions by the end of February in order to lower the price per kilogramme to Rs 35.

Onion prices have been bringing tears as domestic prices stay elevated for over 4 months

In an effort to rein in onion prices, which have increased by 48 per cent, the government is amassing a massive buffer stock, which in November contributed to a higher-than-average inflation rate of 5.55 per cent.

The government has already prohibited the edible bulb's exports because general elections are soon.

"We are continuing to procure the commodity to bring it to 7 lakh tonnes, and we have built up a substantial buffer of 5 lakh tonnes." In order to lower prices, we are also offloading this buffer concurrently. When the buffer runs out in late February, prices should drop to around Rs 35 per kilogramme, and by March, they should return to normal levels of around Rs 20, according to Consumer Affairs Secretary Rohit Kumar Singh, who spoke with Moneycontrol.

As of December 12, the average price of onions throughout India is Rs 55.12 per kilogram.

Up until now, the government has purchased roughly 5.10 lakh tonnes of onions and offloaded 2.72 lakh tonnes in expensive markets through both open markets and direct retail sales to customers.

Data indicates that government-held buffers keep prices under control, giving us a strong buffer to step in further. Then, traders are aware that they cannot control the market, according to Singh.

Export ban

In an effort to keep domestic prices under control, on August 19, the Centre decided to buy an extra 200,000 tonnes of onions from farmers while also enacting a 40 per cent export duty on onions. But because prices did not decline much, on October 29 it also announced a minimum export price (MEP) of $800 per million tonnes (free-on-board basis).

"But even with MEP, we observed that over a lakh tonne of exports were made each month because other neighbouring countries' onion prices remained high," the secretary continued.

The MEP was first implemented on December 31 and was later extended to a complete export prohibition through March 2024.

Delays in Kharif arrivals, export restrictions by Egypt and Turkey, hailstorms during Kharif crops, and high global retail prices as a result of availability worries have all been blamed for the price increase.

After the kitchen staple's retail sale price in the national capital surpassed Rs 80 per kg, while prices in the mandis stayed around Rs 60 per kg, exports of this staple were ultimately outlawed. Since July, the Consumer Price Index basket's onion inflation has been in double digits, with a nearly four-year high of 42.1 per cent in October.

The official Air India account shared a video on X featuring crew members dressed in the newest uniforms.

"A tribute to Air India's illustrious past and a sign of the airline's promising future, please accept our new pilot and cabin crew uniforms.
