Today's road closures and traffic advisories in Ahmedabad for the India vs. Pakistan World Cup match

World Cup game between India and Pakistan: Ahmedabad, Gujarat, is the site of the ICC (International Cricket Council) Men's Cricket World Cup. Cricket matches will be played in Ahmedabad on October 14, November 4, November 10, and the World Cup final will be held there on November 19.

Traffic detours would be in place for the match days between 11 am and 12 am, according to a notice from the Ahmedabad Police.

Road restrictions and alternate routes are mentioned in the alert. There will be no access from Janpath T to the main gate of Motera, or from Krupa Residency T to Motera T. A different route

During the days of the matches, the Gujarat Metro Rail Corporation (GMRC) increased train frequency and added three hours to the metro service times in Ahmedabad.

At the moment, Ahmedabad's metro train services run every hour from 6:20 am to 10:00 night, at a frequency of every 12 minutes." According to Gujarat Samachar's reporting of a GMRC news release.

GMRC added, "Metro trains shall be available from 6.20 am to 1 am due to scheduled World Cup cricket matches at Narendra Modi Stadium, Moter."

On match days, it was also specified that entry gates will be open at Motera Stadium and Sabarmati stations till the final train left Motera Stadium at 1:00 am, with exit gates remaining open at all other metro stations until 10:00 pm, according to Gujarat Samachar.

Also, a paper ticket option has been added to let passengers skip the line-up at Motera Stadium station while buying return tickets. These tickets, which allow travel to any station after 10 p.m. on match days, can be purchased at any time during the day for 50 per head.

The 2030 FIFA World Cup will be hosted in six countries across three continents.

FIFA and world football officials agreed Wednesday to accept a single offer that extended from Spain-Portugal to include Morocco, Argentina, Paraguay, and Uruguay in a tournament that would take place on three continents and in six nations.

Among the most important concerns was how to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the World Cup in Uruguay, where the initial tournament final was staged in 1930.

Argentina, Paraguay, and Uruguay are vying to host the first matches of the 2030 World Cup, with a special goal of playing in Montevideo, Uruguay's capital and site of the 1930 Cup final.

"The centennial World Cup could not be far from South America, where everything began," said Alejandro Dominguez, head of South American soccer governing body CONMEBOL. "The 2030 World Cup will be played in three continents."

FIFA will allow all six of those countries' national teams to receive automatic entries, and Morocco will be the first North Africa nation to host the event.

The 2030 decision has sped up the process of finding a home for the 2034 World Cup, which is to be held in Asia or Oceania, likely in November and December. Saudi Arabia now becomes the primary candidate for the 2034 edition.

The 2030 FIFA agreement still must meet formal approval in 2024 during a meeting of the 211 member federations.

"In 2030," according to a statement issued by FIFA president Gianni Infantino, "we will have a unique global footprint, three continents —Africa, Europe and South America — six countries — Argentina, Morocco, Paraguay, Portugal, Spain and Uruguay —welcoming and uniting the world while celebrating together the beautiful game, the centenary and the FIFA World Cup."

The current World Cup field of 32 teams will be reduced to 48 for the 2026 edition, which will be contested in the United States, Mexico, and Canada.

Football Supporters Europe, a fan organisation legally recognized by the Union of European Football Associations, voiced its discontent with the long distances necessary in 2030 and feels this will help Saudi Arabia's 2034 candidacy.

"FIFA continues its cycle of destruction against the greatest tournament on the planet," according to an FSE statement. "Horrendous for supporters, disregards the environment and rolls the red carpet out to a host for 2034 with an appalling human rights record."

The 104-match 2030 tournament will take place in June and July.

Shubman Gill has dengue fever and is questionable for India's match against Australia.

Shubman Gill's availability for India's ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 opener against Australia has been called into question.

According to PTI, Gill, who came in Chennai with Team India on Wednesday morning, has been diagnosed with 'Dengue' and is being treated.

The great player skipped India's training session on Thursday and will be tested today by the BCCI medical panel. Gill's availability for the October 8 match at Chepauk will be determined only after testing.

The 24-year-old has been in excellent form for India in One-Day cricket this year, scoring 1,230 runs and seven hundreds.

After a dry spell following the hugely successful Indian Premier League 2023, Gill rediscovered his form in the Asia Cup 2023 and extended his fantasy run in three ODIs against Australia.

The Gujarat Titans player made 890 runs in the IPL 2023 and finished with 302 runs in India's victory in the Asia Cup.

If Gill is ruled out, India would bat first with either Ishan Kishan or KL Rahul, with the Mumbai Indians player having the edge over the Lucknow Super Giants skipper.

Rahul's recent record in the middle order has been spectacular, and he has been in fantastic form since returning from injury.

Both warm-ups against England and the Netherlands were canceled due to rain, thus Rohit Sharma and company will enter the tournament opener against Australia with no game experience.

"Where's the crowd?" chants the audience during the opening match of the Cricket World Cup.

It was advertised as the most anticipated cricket event of the year, to be staged in the sport's largest stadium in the world, in a country famed for its devotion to the game.

However, when the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 finally began on Thursday in India, just a few thousand seats were occupied in a stadium that had been renovated for the event in order to accommodate at least 120,000 fans.

As England and New Zealand faced off at Ahmedabad's Narendra Modi Stadium, which will be renamed after India's prime leader in 2021, cricket fans flocked to social media to voice their outrage at the rows of vacant saffron-colored seats staring back at them.

Danni Wyatt of England women's cricket asked "Where's the crowd?" in a post on X, the social networking site formerly known as Twitter.

Her Indian counterpart, Jemimah Rodrigues, stated that the audience is anticipating India's match against Pakistan on Saturday, October 14.

Delayed ticket release, last-minute changes anger fans

The tournament's scheduling and ticketing procedures have been criticized by fans.

The initial set of tickets went on sale on August 25, fewer than six weeks before the first match, making travel arrangements problematic.

Indian cricket fans who had been waiting for years to see the sport's greatest event in their own country told Al Jazeera that they had given up on their ambition of cheering for their side at home.

Vipul Yadav, a well-traveled sports enthusiast, called the ticketing process's administration "nonsensical."

"Nowhere else in the world do you have to fight so hard for a ticket." "All of this happened because the ticket release was done too late," he explained.

No Indian team, no Indian fans

Several hundred supporters from both competing countries could be visible in the stands during the first few innings of the England vs. New Zealand match.

When the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary Jay Shah was spotted sat in the stands in the middle of England's innings, he took it upon himself to fill at least one more seat.

As the game progressed, local supporters began to fill some seats, although attendance was nowhere near half full.

During the match commentary, former India captain Ravi Shastri stated that India's absence in the first match may be a major reason in the seeming lack of interest from local spectators.

Indeed, this is the first time in 27 years that the tournament's opening match has not featured a host nation.

Ironically, the last time it happened was during an India-hosted World Cup, with the same teams squaring off at the same location, albeit then known as the Motera Stadium.

Before the game, Indian cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar stepped onto the field with the tournament winner's trophy and happily waved to the few fans.

Later, Tendulkar sought to patiently explain the local supporters' devotion to foreign cricketers, promising to "make it a special event for all players."

However, the backlash persisted online.

Manya, an Indian cricket enthusiast and writer, believes that creating the world's largest stadium is not the same as becoming the world's sports administration.

Asian Games: A historic table tennis bronze that was 20 years in the making

Sutirtha Mukherjee and Ayhika Mukherjee's giant-slaying run ended with a historic bronze medal at the Asian Games after the Indian duo lost the closely-fought women's doubles semifinal 3-4 to North Korea in Hangzhou on Monday.

HANGZHOU: Coming to China and not soaking in the ping pong, or table tennis atmosphere is like visiting India and not watching cricket. The Mukherjees, Ayhika and Sutirtha, started making those plans two decades ago as kids in West Bengal's Naihati.

The Indian pair realised their dream of playing at the Asian Games in style at the 19th Asian Games with a bronze medal in women's doubles the country's maiden podium finish in the category at the Games.

Two days before losing in the semifinals, the Mukherjees had hushed a capacity crowd at the Gongshu Canal Sports Park Gymnasium by defeating China's reigning world champions Chen Meng and Yidi Wang in their last-eight match to create a massive stir in China - a country that virtually worships its TT stars.

There was a beeline to get their thoughts after the win over the world champion team. The same surname of two Indian girls foxed some of the foreign journalists into believing that they are sisters.

"We are not sisters, but we share the same surname. We have known each other and played together since childhood, so it is very easy to understand each other," Ayhika had said then.

"I can read her mind and she can read mine. And we really have fun on the table, no matter if we are losing or are playing against the world's best."

The semifinal entry assured them a medal. But the last-four clash against the North Koreans Cha Suyong and Pak Sugyong on Monday ended in an agonising defeat that travelled the distance in the best-of-seven match.

The Koreans won 7-11, 11-8, 7-11, 11-8, 11-9, 5-11, 11-2 for a place in the gold-medal match.

"They (Ayhika & Sutirtha) started in the same club," said coach Mamta Prabhu.
"Their friendship goes back more than 20 years. They know each other really well, know the ins and outs of each other. That's why the bonding is really strong."

The Mukherjees didn't start well, but kept throwing punches to come back, but then lost the fourth and fifth games, facing a must-win situation in the next game. They won it to make it 3-3 and take the match into the decider.

"I think the North Koreans had a few points where they played really fantastic and they (Indian team) were totally out of rhythm then. Not a happy day for us, I can say."

The crowd wasn't as much a factor on Monday as in the quarterfinal, but the locals still backed the Koreans.

"We are used to it. In the last match (quarter-final) we played against China. There were more cheers than this. This time the crowd was in favour of North Korea but we are used to it," said Mamta.

Sutirtha and Ayhika, childhood friends from Naihati, are happy, though the disappointment of not going past the semi-finals was also evident in their words.

Men's hockey team from India departs for the Asian Games

NEW DELHI: The Indian men's hockey team is prepared to continue its remarkable run when they compete in the next Asian Games, which get underway on September 23 in Hangzhou.

On September 24, India launches their offensive against Uzbekistan. India is in Pool A of the event, along with strong opponents like Pakistan, Japan, Bangladesh, Singapore, and Uzbekistan. Korea, Malaysia, China, Oman, Thailand, and Indonesia make up Pool B in the meantime.

The semifinal round of the tournament will feature the top two teams from each pool, which heightens the tension and rivalry of the event.

Harmanpreet Singh will serve as the team's captain, and Hardik will be his assistant. Performances by the squad, particularly in the just finished Asian Champions Trophy in Chennai, have demonstrated how diligently they have prepared. They now want to keep performing at that level and place on the podium at the Asian Games.

Before the squad's trip to Hangzhou, Indian team captain Harmanpreet Singh expressed his sentiments, saying, "The team has been working hard to be ready for the Asian Games, and we did well at the just-completed Asian Champions Trophy in Chennai. Now we want to keep up that level of play. Although we have some challenging competition in our Pool, we are confident in our preparedness and intend to place highly."

Nilakanta Sharma, Hardik Singh, Manpreet Singh, Vivek Sagar Prasad, Sumit, and Shamsher Singh will form the backbone of the midfield. Abhishek, Gurjant Singh, Mandeep Singh, Sukhjeet Singh, and Lalit Kumar Upadhyay will lead the offensive line.

Hardik Singh, the vice captain, emphasised his confidence by saying, "We are in the best physical and mental preparation to go to Hangzhou, and we are anticipating the intense competition within our team. The objective is to maintain our recent level of performance and leave China with a medal."

On September 26, 28, and 30, respectively, Singapore, Japan, and Pakistan will be the opponents in India's group stage games. Bangladesh will be the last opponent on October 2. The Indian hockey team will want to stand out in the competition and become a serious contender in the Asian Games in Hangzhou.
