Turkey requests that Sweden take "concrete actions" against terrorism in order to earn support for its NATO candidature.

Turkey has warned Sweden that it must take "concrete steps" against terrorism, which Ankara claims Stockholm supports in the name of free speech, if it wants to join the US-led NATO alliance amid Russia's ongoing offensive in Ukraine.

"We don't see a satisfactory level of implementation," Turkey's vice president Cevdet Yilmaz was quoted as saying by the Financial Times.

Turkey is fighting a resurgence of Kurdish insurgents, as evidenced by an attack near the parliamentary building in Ankara on Sunday (Oct 1), just before the start of a parliament session.

Sweden's NATO bid and Turkey's opposition: Latest sequence of events

Turkey's President Recep Tayyip Erdogan stated in July that Ankara would no longer oppose Sweden's request to join NATO.

However, Erdogan's purported commitment to allow Sweden to join NATO must be ratified by the Swedish parliament. The parliament reconvened on Sunday, but the agenda was overshadowed by a suicide bombing near the parliamentary premise.

During the NATO summit in July, while Erdogan agreed to allow Sweden to join the US-led military alliance, his Justice and Development Party (AKP) allies in parliament asserted that Stockholm must act against alleged Kurdish separatists if it is to join NATO.

The Kurdish group Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) is accused of orchestrating a coup attempt in 2016.

Ylmaz also warned Sweden that, because these issues are so important to Ankara, the parliament would be put under a lot of pressure if Stockholm did not take significant steps. Sweden agreed with Turkey last year to take tough measures against extremist organisations, including the Kurdish militant group.

"Because there is public opinion in Turkey," Ylmaz said, "our parliament is very sensitive about these issues."

"If we don't see enough progress in practise, the parliament will be put under tremendous strain."

Ylmaz went on to say that if "real concrete steps are taken," it would be fairly dependent on parliamentary approval.

Reliance Retail will acquire the South Asian licences of UK-based Superdry.

MUMBAI: Reliance Retail Ventures will pay 40 million pounds to purchase the ailing I-JK-based Superdry brand and related trademarks in three Asian countries.

The Superdry brand, trademarks, and other intellectual property assets encompassing India, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh will be transferred to a new entity in which Reliance Retail's indirect subsidiary, Reliance Brands Holding I-JK, would control 76% and Superdry Plc will keep 24%.

Reliance Retail's relationship with Superdry dates back to 2012, when the former acquired the I-JK-based clothier's India franchise rights. According to a filing with the London Stock Exchange, Superdry will invest around 10 million pounds in the new entity, which will be offset by the 40 million pounds received from Reliance Retail.

Superdry's intellectual property assets encompassing the three South Asian areas accounted for around 1.8% of total sales in the fiscal year ending April 30, generating approximately 11 million pounds in revenue and 2.6 million pounds in operating profit, according to the company.

According to Superdry, the agreement with Reliance Retail will also involve intellectual property rights for its new designs. It thinks that the acquisition would give its brand with the "greatest chances" in South Asia, allowing it to "concentrate on building its brand and generating sales in its more established areas, where it has the most experience."

Reliance Retail, owned by billionaire Mukesh Ambani, has over 18,000 outlets in India, offering over 50 distinct fashion brands. In India, it also holds the intellectual property rights for the Gas and Iconix brands. Iconix represents 23 brands, including Ed Hardy, London Fog, Umbro, and Hydraulic.

Julian Dunkerton and James Holder founded Superdry after visiting Tokyo in 2003. The arrangement with Reliance Retail would also assist the British firm enhance its liquidity, strengthen its balance sheet, and support its continuing working capital requirements as part of its recovery strategy, according to the company.

During her husband Rishi Sunak's event, Akshata Murty "gatecrashed" and stole his thunder.

In a surprise appearance before the Conservative Party conference in Manchester on Wednesday, Akshata Murty introduced her "best buddy" Rishi Sunak for his first speech in that capacity.

New Delhi: Akshata Murty, the first lady of the UK of Indian descent, provided some insight into her relationship with her husband Rishi Sunak in her widely shared political debut speech.

In a surprise appearance before the Conservative Party conference in Manchester on Wednesday, Ms. Murty introduced her "best buddy" Rishi Sunak for his first address in that capacity. She stated that her spouse was ignorant of her "gate-crashing" as the warm-up act before the annual conference's centrepiece during her lighthearted and frank address.

Here are some of the quotes from Akshata Murty 's speech:

We are best friends, one team

I could not image being anywhere else than here today to express my support for Rishi and the party because we are each other's greatest friends.

Struck by two things about him

"When we were both 24 years old and studying abroad in America, Rishi and I first connected. Two things about him stood out to me right away: his ardent love for his own country of the United Kingdom and his genuine desire to provide as many people as possible the chance to experience the same possibilities he was fortunate enough to enjoy. He felt utterly energised by it. The decision to be with Rishi was the simplest I've ever made ".

During tough times

"I occasionally remind Rishi that he is fighting for his principles when things become difficult. that despite the difficulties ahead, he is fighting for the principles of our party. That success is a difficult one ".

His incredible zest for life

"He has an amazing enthusiasm for living. His moral rectitude, forthrightness, and ability to distinguish right from wrong were what pulled me to him the most. It's what I continue to be pulled to even now, 14 years into my marriage."

A proud wife

"Rishi, you are aware that doing the right thing over the long run, despite difficulty, is the best course of action. I hope you are also aware of how happy you make our daughters and me every day ".

Nanded hospital dean, doctor arrested for woman's death, and infant deaths

The police have registered a case of culpable homicide not amounting to murder against Dr Shyamrao Wakode, the dean Dr Shankarao Chavan Government Medical College and Hospital and another doctor after a woman and her infant died at the hospital in Maharashtra’s Nanded district, officials said. The state government-run hospital has recently witnessed the deaths of 37 people, including 18 infants, in a span of four days.

Officials in Nanded Gramin police station on Wednesday night booked Dr Wakode and the chief doctor of the paediatric department on the complaint of Kamaji Mohan Tompe, the father of Anjali Manchek Waghmare, 22, who died Wednesday unaware that her baby girl had died two days ago.

According to Tompe, a farmer from Nanded, Anjali was first rushed to a primary healthcare centre by her family, and from there she was referred to a sub-district hospital. Since her condition did not improve, the family followed the doctor’s instructions at the sub-district hospital and got her admitted to the Dr Shankarao Chavan Government Medical College and Hospital on September 30, he stated.

"On October 1, she gave birth to a girl early, and my daughter and the baby were well at the moment. But, after a few hours, medical personnel told me that Anjali was bleeding and that her situation was getting worse. We were requested to set up blood by the doctors. No one was there when we organised blood packages and proceeded to the ward to deliver them to medical professionals and personnel, the man said in the complaint.

Tompe claimed to have seen Dr. Wakode and informed him that neither a doctor nor any personnel were available to care for his daughter. I had to wait a very long period. There was no personnel or physician dispatched to the patient. I was assaulted and kicked out when I followed up with Dr. Wakode about the situation. He added that the hospital staff did not provide his daughter or the child with any care and that he was not even permitted to meet them.

"Doctors and nurses were not dispatched to treat the patient despite being aware of their poor state. On October 2, around 6 am, the newborn passed away. Anjali also passed away on October 4 at 10:30 a.m., according to Tompe's statement in the FIR.

Nagnath Tompe, Anjali's brother, said that the family was not informed of the circumstances surrounding his sister and her child's deaths. "Doctors basically claimed Anjali died from heavy bleeding, while the infant died from polluted water in her mouth. My sister was still not able to be saved even though we had brought 14 to 15 packets of blood, Tompe stated.

According to Anjali's father, the family spent Rs 45,000 on prescription drugs and blood packs. Nagnath Tompe claimed that because his sister's health was in poor condition, the family did not tell Anjali about the newborn's passing. "We believed that this would have had a negative effect on her health. But she passed away tonight while receiving treatment," he added.

The family members were having a hard time comforting Anjali's mother at the hospital. Tompe stated, "My family and relatives are in great sorrow and don't know how to deal with a circumstance where two of your family members perished in just a matter of three days.

Manchek, the spouse of Anjali, works in a brick industry. The police will shortly take the dean and the other doctor's statements after they were arrested for guilty home invasion not amounting to murder and common interest, respectively, under sections 304 and 34 of the Indian Criminal Code (IPC).

In the aftermath of ED searches on AAP MP Sanjay Singh, BJP hoardings in Delhi demand Kejriwal's resignation.

On Wednesday, the Bharatiya Janata Party slammed Arivnd Kerjriwal's Aam Aadmi Party, saying, "AAP signifies 'Aur Adhik Paap.'" The remarks came after the Enforcement Directorate raided MP Sanjay Singh's home in connection with a money laundering investigation relating to the suspected Delhi excise policy scam.

"AAP signifies 'Aur Adhik Paap,' and the 'paap' (sin) of booze scam is coming out day by day," BJP National Spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla said in a video message on X, previously Twitter.

"Now, we see that instead of delivering a report card on the liquor scam that has taken place under Arvind Kejriwal's watch and patronage, they are playing the victimisation card," said a BJP spokeswoman.

"If Mr Arvind Kejriwal has stated that they (AAP members) are 'Kattar Imandar' (very honest) and have committed no corruption, why are Manish Sisodia and Vijay Nair still in jail?" "Why haven't they been helped?" Poonawalla inquired.

"Today, when two approvers, one of whom is Dinesh Arora - a key architect and mastermind in the entire case (liquor scam) and he has allegedly also given a confession as to how Sanjay Singh is involved, how he was the one to introduce Manish Sisodia, how money was collected and funnelled into AAP's election campaigns in Delhi and other parts," he continued.

Poonwalla stated that there are other proofs, including digital evidence, of how evidence was destroyed and falsified. "There is now information that demonstrates that the 2.5% commission was hiked to 12%." The sting operation revealed how money was gathered and extorted..."

"It is also clear that the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) permitted banned and manufacturing enterprises to enter and took no action against them. All of this documentary, digital, and other evidence was presented in court, and the party received no relief. Even now, the AAP plays the victim card "The BJP spokesperson stated.

"Arvind Kejriwal has admitted that there was corruption because they reverted to the previous policies and even extended them. Instead of assisting the people of Delhi during COVID-19, Kejriwal and his team put up liquor outlets in every ward of the national capital "he stated.

ED raids at AAP's Sanjay Singh residence

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) searched Sanjay Singh's home on Wednesday in connection with a money laundering investigation related to the suspected Delhi excise policy fraud. The raids were carried out a day after a court granted approval to two of the case's suspects.

The ED has already questioned the Rajya Sabha MP from AAP and people connected to him in this issue.

The Delhi government's excise policy for 2021-22, which grants licences to liquor merchants, is said to have facilitated cartelisation and favoured particular dealers who reportedly paid bribes for it, a claim strenuously denied by the AAP.

Raghav Magunta, son of YSR Congress Party Lok Sabha Member Magunta Srinivasulu Reddy, and Delhi-based businessman Dinesh Arora were granted approval in a money laundering case relating to the alleged Delhi excise policy fraud by a Delhi court on Tuesday.

Magunta and Arora were both pardoned by Special Judge M K Nagpal, who also ordered them to help with the inquiry and provide whatever information they had regarding the crime to the investigators.

Singh wrote to Finance Secretary T V Somanathan in May of this year, claiming that the ED Director and Assistant Director purposefully connected his name to the alleged liquor scam without any foundation, ruining his public image and defaming him. He also stated that his name was inserted based on Dinesh Arora's remarks.

During a cloudburst, flash floods hit Sikkim, washing away parts of the national highway

On Wednesday, an overflowing Teesta river washed away sections of NH-10, which connects Sikkim to the rest of the nation. The river water level soared to dangerous levels after a cloudburst sparked a flash flood in the northeastern state.

The cloudburst happened above Lhonak Lake in North Sikkim, flooding the river that runs through Sikkim and West Bengal.

A huge search is underway to find 23 Army servicemen who were reported missing following the flash floods.

Locals' videos showed a significant portion of a road being washed away by the roaring river floods. According to the Central Water Commission, the Teesta was running below the danger level at 6 a.m. on Wednesday and was projected to pass it within six hours.

"The flash flood swept over the Teesta River, washing Indreni Bridge in Singtam town, around 30 kilometres from Gangtok." A connecting bridge of the Balutar hamlet was also swept away at 4 a.m., according to the Gangtok District Administration. Several Singtam residents have been moved to makeshift relief camps in the town.

People in Chungthang, 90 kilometres north of Gangtok and near the Teesta Dam, have also been rescued. According to the defence ministry, two bridges linking Singtam and Chungthang in North Sikkim were also destroyed in the towns of Dikchu and Toong. The Border Road Organisation (BRO) is rescuing residents in the affected regions.

"Nobody was hurt, but there was severe damage to public property. Several others have gone missing as well. There are ongoing relief efforts "Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang stated this during a visit to Singtam.

People residing along the Teesta River's banks have also been warned to leave their houses for their own safety. An advisory bulletin from the Sikkim State Disaster Management Authority recommended everyone to keep vigilant and avoid travel along the Teesta river basin.

"Light to moderate rainfall is forecast throughout Sikkim during the next 3-4 days," the meteorological service stated in a tweet.

IDFC First Bank's QIP for Rs 3,000 crore is expected to begin today; check the pricing

Unidentified sources told CNBC TV18 that IDFC First Bank is set to raise Rs 3,000 crore through a qualified institutional placement (QIP) on October 3. A green shoe option will be included in the issue. The QIP price is expected to be around Rs 90-91 per share, representing a 3-4 percent reduction to the October 3 closing price of Rs 94.25.

The QIP's bankers include a mix of domestic and foreign corporations. In the annual general meeting (AGM) conducted in August of this year, shareholders authorised money raising.

IDFC First Bank also announced a QIP in 2021, at an issue price of Rs 57.35 per share. The bank distributed 52.31 crore equity shares to qualifying institutional buyers for a total of Rs 3,000 crore.

Technical Details

IDFC Bank is trading lower than its 5-, 10-, and 20-day moving averages, but higher than its 50-, 100-, and 200-day moving averages. The private lander's market capitalization is Rs 63,291.9 crore, and the company's one-year beta is 1.29, suggesting strong volatility.

In comparison to the Nifty 50's 16.1 percent one-year gain, IDFC First Bank increased 97.2 percent in the same time period, nearly tripling investors' wealth. 'Canada is not aiming to aggravate the issue,' says Justin Trudeau, as India demands over 40 ambassadors to leave.

Canada's Prime Minister Justin Trudeau speaks to media outside his office on Parliament Hill in Ottawa (REUTERS)

On Tuesday, Canada Prime Minister Justin Trudeau reiterated that his country was "not aiming to aggravate the issue" with India. The statements came only hours after New Delhi was reported to have summoned more than 40 ambassadors to leave the country.

"Canada has no intention of escalating the issue with India." Will continue to interact with New Delhi in a responsible and productive manner. "We want to be on the ground in India to assist Canadian families," Trudeau said, according to Reuters.

The Financial Times reported earlier on Tuesday that India has requested the return of 41 diplomats by October 10. Individuals who do not comply with the deadline risk having their diplomatic immunity withdrawn.

During a press conference on Tuesday, Trudeau, however, failed to confirm the claims of expulsion.

For several weeks, relations between India and Canada have been strained after Trudeau stated that there were "credible claims" of New Delhi's participation in the death of Hardeep Singh Nijjar. In June, masked gunmen assassinated the 45-year-old Sikh separatist leader, a Canadian citizen. Indian officials vigorously refuted the charges, even as Ottawa backed up its assertions.

Since then, both governments have removed a senior diplomat, and India has cancelled Canadian visas. During the G20 conference in New Delhi earlier this month, Trudeau had heated exchanges with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. A few days later, Canada cancelled a scheduled trade trip to India for the fall.

Nijjar's death was the subject of intelligence. According to a New York Times story citing sources, Trudeau's charges were motivated by "shared intelligence among Five Eyes allies."

Meanwhile, American authorities are reported to have informed Ottawa with intelligence on Nijjar's death. According to a New York Times story citing sources, Trudeau's charges were motivated by "shared intelligence among Five Eyes allies." The claims have left the Joe Biden administration in an untenable diplomatic position, with officials admitting the issue but avoiding assigning blame.

Delhi Earthquake Today: Massive earthquake tremors felt in Delhi-NCR

Huge vibrations were detected in Delhi today as a result of a 4.6 magnitude earthquake in neighbouring Nepal.

The epicentre of the earthquake was located in Nepal, according to the National Institute for Seismology.

The National Centre for Seismology issued a statement saying, "Earthquake of Magnitude:4.6, Occurred on 03-10-2023, 14:25:52 IST, Lat: 29.37 & Long: 81.22, Depth: 10 Km, Location: Nepal, for more details Download the BhooKamp App."

The initial earthquake was 4.6 magnitude and 10 kilometres deep. The second earthquake, with a magnitude of 6.2, struck at 14:51 1ST and had a depth of 5 kilometres.

The earthquake jolts Delhi-NCR and causes significant tremors in portions of northern India.

Tremors were also observed in Chandigarh, Jaipur, and other northern Indian cities. The police control room in Jaipur stated that no information about any losses was available at the time.

Nepal is located in one of the most active tectonic zones on the planet, classified as seismic zones IV and V. Because of its geographical location, the country is especially vulnerable to earthquakes.

According to the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) in the United States, on April 25, 2015, Nepal had a terrible 7.8 magnitude earthquake, resulting in the sad loss of over 8,000 lives and injuring over 21,000 others.

Keep an eye out for these ultra-processed foods that are thought to be healthy.

Ultra-processed foods (UPFs) are manufactured using complicated industrial methods and contain a variety of additives. These items frequently include low-quality ingredients such processed sugars, harmful fats, and chemical preservatives. Sugary beverages, packaged snacks, quick food, and ready-to-eat meals are all examples of UPFs.

While labelling any Meal as really "healthy" is difficult, certain ultra-processed foods may look healthier owing to marketing strategies or promises on the container. Their overall nutritional profile, however, remains problematic. A Product, for example, may claim to be whole grain or enriched with vitamins and minerals, yet it may still have excessive quantities of added sugars, toxic trans fats, or hazardous ingredients. Continue reading for a list of UPFs that may look healthy but are not.

10 Ultra-processed foods that may seem healthy but aren't:

1. Granola bars

Many granola bars sold in stores are high in sugar, chemical additives, and bad fats. Making homemade granola bars using natural sweeteners like honey or maple syrup, whole grain oats, plus nuts, seeds, and dried fruits for extra nutrients is a better choice.

2. Flavoured yogurt

Flavored yoghurts can have a high sugar content. Choose plain yoghurt and top with your favourite natural sweetener, such as fresh fruit or a drizzle of honey.

3. Breakfast cereals

Many nutritious morning cereals are loaded with sugar, processed carbohydrates, and artificial colours. Select whole grain cereals that do not have added sugars, or create your own granola with whole oats, nuts, and seeds.

4. Veggie chips

Veggie chips, despite their name, are often heavily processed and contain few genuine veggies. Make your own vegetable crisps by thinly slicing fresh vegetables and baking them till crispy.

5. Protein bars

While some protein bars are helpful, many of them are highly processed and contain additional sugars and artificial substances. Seek for bars with basic, identifiable components, or go for whole food choices such as a handful of almonds or a hard-boiled egg.

6. Bottled smoothies

Smoothies in a can sometimes have extra sugars and lack the fibre found in entire fruits. As a basis, combine fresh or frozen fruits and vegetables, plain yoghurt, water, or natural juice.

7. Multigrain bread

Many multigrain bread options are still made with refined grains. Opt for whole grain bread made with whole wheat, oats, or other whole grain flours.

8. Reduced-fat peanut butter

To compensate for the lower fat, reduced-fat peanut butter sometimes contains additional sugars or toxic hydrogenated oils. Avoid adding sugars or oils to natural peanut butter produced only from peanuts.

9. Fruit-flavoured yogurt drinks

These drinks often contain artificial flavours and added sugars. Instead, try blending fresh fruits with plain yogurt and water for a homemade, healthier version.

10. Margarine

Several margarines include hydrogenated oils and other additives. For spreading on toast or cooking, use genuine butter or healthier plant-based alternatives such as olive oil or avocado.

The biggest problem with UPFs is its negative influence on health when ingested in excess. Alcohol consumption has been related to a variety of health issues, including obesity, cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, and some forms of cancer. As a result, it's typically advised to avoid ultraprocessed meals in favour of whole and less processed alternatives, which are often more nutrient-dense and enhance overall well-being.

Oats are often considered the healthiest food option. It is rich in nutrients like fibre which makes it the ideal food option for people who are trying to lose weight. Consuming oats is also helpful if you are diabetic.

Engineering exports affected by global slowdown: EEPC

Overall engineering exports during April to August in 2023 dropped 4.55 per cent to USD 44.62 billion as against USD 46.74 billion in the previous similar period of 2022.

Engineering Exports Promotion Council (EEPC) said that overall exports of engineering goods from the country have been affected by the global slowdown.

Overall engineering exports during April to August in 2023 dropped 4.55 per cent to USD 44.62 billion as against USD 46.74 billion in the previous similar period of 2022.

According to an EEPC spokesman, engineering exports to Russia surged 178 per cent to USD 568.41 million during April to August of fiscal 2023-24, which was USD 204.17 million in the corresponding previous period.

The exporters' body said that some of the major trading partners like the US and European countries have been affected by the global slowdown.

The Russia-Ukraine conflict has also been ongoing, while China is also experiencing a slowdown. All these factors have affected India's engineering export demand, EEPC said.

Engineering exports to the US fell 14 per cent year-on-year during April to August 2023.

EEPC is also of the view that India should sign free trade agreements (FTAs) with non-traditional markets like Latin America and Africa to boost engineering exports.

The FTAs with UAE and Australia have provided a fillip to engineering exports with shipments to both nations rising nine per cent during April to August of the current financial year.

Engineering exports to the UAE during April to August of the current fiscal touched USD 2.24 billion, while that for Australia touched USD 596.14 million.

Zomato surges 72% this year, nears 52-week high on ICC World Cup booster

Zomato share price has soared around 67 percent in the past one year. Technicals show that the relative strength index of the stock stands at 61.3, implying that it's trading neither in the overbought nor in the oversold territory

The share price of Zomato jumped around 2.5 percent on Tuesday to an intraday high of Rs 104.30 on the NSE amid positive outlook on account of the ICC Men's World Cup 2023. The stock has rallied over 70 percent so far this year, and is just shy of its 52-week high of Rs 105.

Zomato could be the biggest beneficiary of the World Cup in the post-Covid era, said Karan Taurani, Senior Vice President - Research Analyst at Elara Capital, said in an interview with CNBC-TV18.

“If you look at the market share numbers over the last 3-4 years, pizza has lost market share as a category within the overall QSR chain. It's a win-win for burger, fried chicken for aggregators like Zomato, over the near to medium-term,” Elara Capital's research analyst said.

ICC World Cup boost

According to Taurani, during World Cup 2011 and 2019, Jubilant FoodWorks, operator of Domino's Pizza in India, would have been the biggest beneficiary because of its best user experience in terms of delivery. This time, however, he believes  that Zomato could be the one. “We have seen adoption wherein delivery of food has moved to other categories and not just pizza. Zomato is able to replicate or even do better as compared to Jubilant in terms of the overall delivery experience.”

Increased orders and restaurant partnerships

According to brokerage firm Motilal Oswal, Zomato, as an online food delivery platform, may experience increased orders and restaurant partnerships during the ICC World Cup, especially for home-viewing parties. They can leverage marketing campaigns and special offers to attract more users.

Zomato Technicals

Dhanlaxmi Bank zooms 12% on robust quarterly update

Dhanlaxmi Bank soared stock over 12 percent in afternoon trade on October 3 after the lender posted a robust quarterly update, sparking hopes of strong earnings performances in the September quarter.

Total deposits for the lender rose 8.2 percent in July-September to Rs 13,789 crore, up from Rs 12,748 crore in the same quarter of the previous fiscal.

Gross advances also grew 13.2 percent to Rs 10,312 crore as against Rs 9,109 in the corresponding quarter of the base fiscal.

The update triggered hopes of healthy earnings in the September quarter, which prompted investors to lap up shares of Dhanlaxmi Bank.

At 12.54 pm, Dhanlaxmi Bank was trading 11.5 percent higher at Rs 32.50 on the National Stock Exchange.

The uptick in the stock price was also accompanied by strong volumes, as one crore shares had changed hands by early afternoon, significantly higher than the one-week daily traded average of 22 lakh shares.

The stock has also been a multibagger, delivering nearly 170 percent returns in the past year as it rode on the bullish wave seen across the PSU bank sector.

Regardless, the lender was caught in a controversy in September when independent director Sridhar Kalyanasundaram stepped down from his position. He cited concerns regarding the unethical conduct of the bank's operations and internal factionalism among the board members, among other issues.

Kalyanasundaram also pointed out that the bank's board had received numerous complaints, both anonymous and signed but had consistently chosen to dismiss them as "the habit in this bank over time".

Asian Games: A historic table tennis bronze that was 20 years in the making

Sutirtha Mukherjee and Ayhika Mukherjee's giant-slaying run ended with a historic bronze medal at the Asian Games after the Indian duo lost the closely-fought women's doubles semifinal 3-4 to North Korea in Hangzhou on Monday.

HANGZHOU: Coming to China and not soaking in the ping pong, or table tennis atmosphere is like visiting India and not watching cricket. The Mukherjees, Ayhika and Sutirtha, started making those plans two decades ago as kids in West Bengal's Naihati.

The Indian pair realised their dream of playing at the Asian Games in style at the 19th Asian Games with a bronze medal in women's doubles the country's maiden podium finish in the category at the Games.

Two days before losing in the semifinals, the Mukherjees had hushed a capacity crowd at the Gongshu Canal Sports Park Gymnasium by defeating China's reigning world champions Chen Meng and Yidi Wang in their last-eight match to create a massive stir in China - a country that virtually worships its TT stars.

There was a beeline to get their thoughts after the win over the world champion team. The same surname of two Indian girls foxed some of the foreign journalists into believing that they are sisters.

"We are not sisters, but we share the same surname. We have known each other and played together since childhood, so it is very easy to understand each other," Ayhika had said then.

"I can read her mind and she can read mine. And we really have fun on the table, no matter if we are losing or are playing against the world's best."

The semifinal entry assured them a medal. But the last-four clash against the North Koreans Cha Suyong and Pak Sugyong on Monday ended in an agonising defeat that travelled the distance in the best-of-seven match.

The Koreans won 7-11, 11-8, 7-11, 11-8, 11-9, 5-11, 11-2 for a place in the gold-medal match.

"They (Ayhika & Sutirtha) started in the same club," said coach Mamta Prabhu.
"Their friendship goes back more than 20 years. They know each other really well, know the ins and outs of each other. That's why the bonding is really strong."

The Mukherjees didn't start well, but kept throwing punches to come back, but then lost the fourth and fifth games, facing a must-win situation in the next game. They won it to make it 3-3 and take the match into the decider.

"I think the North Koreans had a few points where they played really fantastic and they (Indian team) were totally out of rhythm then. Not a happy day for us, I can say."

The crowd wasn't as much a factor on Monday as in the quarterfinal, but the locals still backed the Koreans.

"We are used to it. In the last match (quarter-final) we played against China. There were more cheers than this. This time the crowd was in favour of North Korea but we are used to it," said Mamta.

Sutirtha and Ayhika, childhood friends from Naihati, are happy, though the disappointment of not going past the semi-finals was also evident in their words.
